The Vectiv Fastpack FUTURELIGHT is a lightweight hiking shoe that borrows from trail-running design: a single-density 3D TPU plate sits under the forefoot, stiffening the sole and pairing with a rockered midsole to roll the foot through each stride. The plate is the defining feature, doing three jobs at once, propulsion off the toe, lateral stability, and rock protection underfoot, while the rocker smooths the transition from heel to toe. The North Face's FUTURELIGHT membrane handles waterproofing while staying breathable, the upper is an abrasion-resistant performance mesh, and a Surface CTRL rubber outsole with 4mm lugs grips wet and dry ground. It is built for fast, single-day hikes where a light, rolling shoe beats a stiff traditional boot.
Design intent
- The 3D TPU forefoot plate, carried over from running design, stiffens the sole for a propulsive toe-off and underfoot rock protection, working with the rocker geometry to roll the stride forward and ease fatigue over distance.
- Pairing that running-derived ride with a FUTURELIGHT waterproof-breathable membrane and a grippy lugged outsole aims the shoe squarely at fast, single-day hiking rather than load-hauling treks.
Trade-offs
- The rockered, plated midsole feels efficient moving but less settled standing still; on steep static terrain it is less stable than a flatter, stiffer sole.
- The mesh, running-style upper trades abrasion resistance for low weight and flex; rock and scrub will wear it faster than a leather hiking boot.
