Explorer Mid Jjf Mens / Vivobarefoot
The Explorer Mid JJF is an insulated, pull-on winter bootie built on Vivobarefoot's barefoot last: zero-drop, with a wide anatomical toe box and a thin 2.5mm sole that keeps the foot connected to the ground. Rather than leather, the upper is a recycled-polyester puffy shell with a PrimaLoft lining, so the warmth comes from insulation rather than bulk, and an elasticated opening lets it pull on and off without laces. A removable thermal insole adjusts it across seasons, and an All-Terrain outsole with 4mm lugs adds grip on cold, variable ground. It is a collaboration with World Champion surfer John John Florence, released in an exclusive colourway, and it suits people already committed to barefoot footwear who want a warm, weather-ready version for winter.
Design intent
- +Zero-drop construction is a biomechanical position rather than a style: with heel and forefoot level and a 2.5mm sole, the design aims to let the foot move and sense the ground as it would unshod, building foot strength over time.
- +Using a recycled-polyester puffy upper with PrimaLoft insulation rather than a stiff leather boot keeps the bootie warm and weather-ready without adding the rigidity that would undermine the ground-feel the barefoot last is built to deliver.
Trade-offs
- -Moving to zero-drop footwear needs a genuine adjustment period of several weeks to avoid calf and Achilles strain; it is not a drop-in replacement for conventional cushioned, raised-heel shoes.
- -The wide anatomical toe box and minimal sole look unusual next to conventional boots; the shape follows foot anatomy but is conspicuous, and the thin sole offers little underfoot cushioning on hard surfaces.
