NaughtOne Trace Table / NaughtOne
The Trace is a contract-grade table from NaughtOne, the UK maker (now part of MillerKnoll) that builds as readily for workplaces and hospitality as for homes, and its whole character lives in the frame. Handmade from cold-drawn mild steel welded into a single continuous piece, the frame traces a bold, repeating geometric outline, and the top is recessed flush down into it rather than resting on top. Traditionally that top is clear glass, which lets the steel line read as the object; it is equally available in reverse-painted glass, oak or walnut veneer or brushed stainless, set the same way. The steel takes a hard-wearing polyester powder-coat in a wide colour range. It comes in several shapes, sizes and heights, from low coffee table to meeting height, and is built for repeated daily use and a consistent look across a space.
Design intent
- +The single welded mild-steel frame is the design: a continuous traced outline with the top set flush within it, so the structure reads as a drawn line rather than legs holding up a slab.
- +Contract construction means a durable powder-coated frame and specifiable, replaceable tops, built to be maintained and kept consistent across many units rather than discarded.
Trade-offs
- -A glass or veneer top set in steel is a contract object first: durable and consistent, but it will eventually be replaced rather than ageing with the character of solid timber or stone.
- -The Trace is tuned for neutrality and repeatability; it is a well-resolved background piece rather than a foreground one with much personality of its own.
