Nine Sine Lounge Chair / Nine
The Sine Lounge Chair is an outdoor chair designed by Note Design Studio for the Swedish brand NINE, and it is made entirely of stainless steel. Its seat and back are formed from thin curved metal sheets, gapped so rain drains and the chair dries quickly, that drape over a tubular cantilever frame so they read almost as soft as fabric while staying weatherproof. Named after the mathematical sine curve, the frame is a single continuous line with no back legs, which gives a gentle swing and recline and casts the curved shadows the design is built around. It sits low and relaxed, a minimalist take on classic Swedish garden furniture, stackable and rated for contract use, equally at home on a terrace, in a garden or outside a cafe. It comes in three colours.
Design intent
- +Forming the seat and back from single curved metal sheets, draped over the frame and gapped for drainage, makes weatherproof steel behave with the softness of textile.
- +The tubular cantilever frame, a continuous line rather than four legs, does with geometry what a mechanism does on a complex chair: a gentle swing and recline built into the form itself.
Trade-offs
- -It is bare stainless steel with no cushioning: hard-wearing and weatherproof, but firmer underneath than upholstered seating, so longer lounging invites adding a cushion.
- -The low, reclined cantilever stance is made for relaxing outdoors, not for upright tasks; it suits a terrace or garden far more than a desk or table.
