The Aeron is the chair that redrew the office. When Bill Stumpf and Don Chadwick designed it in 1994, they replaced foam and fabric with a taut suspension mesh, Pellicle, that holds the body without padding and lets air pass straight through. The 2016 remaster refined that into 8Z Pellicle: eight zones of varying tension tuned to support, cradle or stabilise different parts of the body, over a die-cast aluminium frame. PostureFit SL braces the sacrum and lumbar to hold a natural spinal curve, and a harmonic tilt follows the body's movement. It comes in three anthropometric sizes rather than one adjustable shell, is built from over half recycled content including ocean-bound plastic, and is backed for twelve years. It suits anyone sitting for long hours who treats a chair as long-term health infrastructure rather than furniture, and accepts the high upfront cost.
Design intent
- The founding decision was to abandon foam and fabric for a tensioned suspension membrane, Pellicle, that supports the body across a breathable surface; the remastered 8Z version varies that tension across eight mapped zones so a single mesh both holds and relieves different parts of the body.
- Offering three anthropometric sizes rather than one heavily adjustable shell is a deliberate fit strategy: the chair is scaled to the body instead of asking every body to adapt to it, which is why it supports such a wide range of users without compromise.
Trade-offs
- The engineering, materials and twelve-year warranty carry a high upfront price, several times a typical office chair, so the value is realised over years of daily use and repairability rather than at purchase.
- The mesh that keeps you cool offers a firmer, more structured feel than a padded chair, and the size-based system means choosing the right size A, B or C matters more than with a one-size-adjustable seat, so it rewards getting the fit right and suits some preferences less.
