The PencilVac is Dyson's attempt to make a cordless vacuum nearly disappear: the whole machine is built around a motor housing no wider than the 38mm handle that grips it, which Dyson rates as the slimmest main body in the cordless market. The Fluffycones cleaner head carries four soft conical brush bars that drive long hair to their narrow tips and spin it off rather than letting it wrap, with exposed end caps that reach the skirting line and LED light front and rear to reveal dust. It runs around thirty minutes on a swappable click-in battery, weighs 1.8kg, and flattens to 95mm to pass under furniture. It suits hard-floor homes where storage is tight and tangled brush bars are the recurring annoyance, not those needing carpet pickup or long single sessions.
Design intent
- The motor is engineered down to fit inside a 38mm handle rather than sitting in a separate barrel, which is what lets the whole machine take a pencil-thin form and lie flat to 95mm under furniture most cordless vacuums cannot reach.
- The four conical brush bars are shaped so collected hair travels to their narrow ends and spirals off into a ball the head can then lift, directly addressing the hair-wrap that fouls most powered cleaner heads over time.
Trade-offs
- Dyson rates it for hard floors only; it is not designed to clean carpet or rugs, which narrows it to homes without significant carpeted areas rather than serving as a whole-house machine.
- The ultra-slim format leaves room for only a 0.08-litre bin and around thirty minutes of run time, so it favours frequent short cleans over long sessions, and a dustier floor means more trips to empty.
